'Tum Bin 2': Return of a franchise after 15 years

tum-bin-2-777When a film becomes a hit, it's quite common for the makers to develop it into a franchise. After all, they want to capitalise on the former's success. However, it's not often that a sequel is made a decade and a half after the success of the first movie. That's what sets writer-filmmaker Anubhav Sinha's 'Tum Bin 2', featuring Aditya Seal, Neha Sharma and Aashim Gulati, apart.

Five reasons that make it an interesting watch...

Master (3)1. Love franchise after 15 years
The first outing, 'Tum Bin', was a surprise hit when it released in 2001. Backed by an excellent soundtrack, the romantic drama was loved by all and fared well at the box office despite being pitted against biggies. It remains to be seen how the audience reacts to 'Tum Bin 2', especially since it is releasing 15 years after its prequel.

2. The music has struck a chord with listeners
Young singer-composer Ankit Tiwari has created a soundtrack that not only boasts of melodious songs like 'Ishq Mubarak', 'Dekh Lena' and 'Dil Nawaziyaan' but also caters to the young audience. Moreover, the producers have recreated late Jagjit Singh's song 'Koi Fariyad' from 'Tum Bin' as 'Teri Fariyaad' for the sequel with supporting vocals by Rekha Bhardwaj.

3. Director Anubhav Sinha lends his technical expertise
The writer-filmmaker has ensured that he has captured the picturesque locations of Scotland beautifully on celluloid. His attention to detail also inspired his actors to give their best shot, making the storytelling more impactful.

4. An interesting mix of supporting cast
Seasoned actors like Kanwaljit Singh and Meher Vij (of 'Bajrangi Bhaijaan' fame) play pivotal roles in the movie. Moreover, West Indian cricketer Dwayne Bravo also has a special appearance. Television actress Mouni Roy will also be seen sizzling in 'Nachna Aaonda Nahin', a recreated version of the famous Punjabi folk number by the same name.

5. A complete family entertainer
The makers promise clean refreshing content with all the ingredients that are bound to wow the young and old alike.

Director denies luxuries to his cast

Master (4)An old-school disciplinarian, Anubhav ensured that his actors did not enjoy the luxury of vanity vans. No gourmet or beverages were permitted on the sets, the only privilege being coffee. At times, the actors had their meals in the cars that were used as props for the shoot.
Neha didn't get a personal make-up artiste or hairstylist. She had to avail the services of the same person who was hired for the entire cast as the movie required minimal make-up.
Instead of hotel rooms, service apartments were rented for the team. They had only three cars for travelling to locations, while Anubhav would jump onto a van to commute.
Since the service apartments had no gyms, the actors would walk 15 minutes to the nearest one for their daily exercise regime.
Once, Neha sprained her ankle while rehearsing for a cliff jump but refrained from visiting a doctor till the day's shoot was wrapped up.

Code words for film's team
The film's actors used code words to steer clear of their director's anger. When Neha got late because of costume issues, she explained the delay to her co-actors as '10-1'.
When Anubhav shot an entire song in an hour, the crew called it 'Rajdhani shot' as usually he would take five-six hours for a sequence.
The crew would be at ease when the director address them as 'jaanam' and would be in a relaxed mood.

Past perfect
  • Coincidentally, both the heroines (Sandali Sinha and Neha Sharma) of 'Tum Bin' and 'Tum Bin 2' hail from Bihar. Himanshu Malik and Aashim Gulati are from Punjab while Priyanshu Chatterjee and Aditya Seal are Bengalis.

  • Interestingly, Anubhav wore the same jacket on the set that he had worn while filming the first film. He considers it as his good luck charm. One wonders how did he maintain it for 15 years.

Producer's note
Bhushan Kumar:

"Fifteen years ago, 'Tum Bin' was my first film as a producer and Anubhav's first as a director. It got tremendous love from the audiences then and became a hit. We are excited about 'Tum Bin 2', which we are confident will receive as much love from cinegoers as the first."
Director's take

Anubhav Sinha:

"'Tum Bin' has been a franchise that has been close to my heart because it carved my journey in the film industry as a director. This Friday, expect to be mesmerised by timeless music, aesthetic screenplay and impactful dialogues. Come fall in love all over again."

'Tum Bin 2', produced by Bhushan Kumar and Anubhav Sinha, releases November 18.
